Project Summary:
Tanzania’s Coastal line along the Indian Ocean is endowed with rich marine biodiversity. Like many other African countries. Tanzania is likely to become more vulnerable to climate change and biodiversity loss. The increasing human population and livelihood activities along the coastal regions contribute to the threats that affect the marine and terrestrial ecosystems of Tanzania. Adding to these challenges is the massive biodiversity loss due to climate change, weak mitigation responses, and related drivers of deforestation. The coastal zone not only sustains but is a significant contributor to the country’s economy. The livelihoods and economies of the growing population living in the rural coastal areas of Tanzania are entwined with the coastal ecosystems’ well-being for protection from natural hazards, obtainment of livelihoods and food security and fish and other marine creatures’ reproduction. Climate crisis and unmanaged human exploitation degrade the natural systems humans rely on for survival and reduce coastal communities’ adaptive capacity and resilience, especially among marginalized groups, such as women, young people, and children. Coast region communities already experience significant poverty and social inequity.

The Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania, in partnership with Jane Goodall Institute Canada and Plan International, have designed a project for Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (COSME). It is a three (3) years project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), in partnership with JCI Canada and Plan International. The project objective is to upscale community livelihoods and capitalize on opportunities for South-South learning by working between Kenya/Tanzania cross-border communities within the same Marine and Coastal Forest Eco-regions on three thematic areas: (i) Mangroves restorations and conservation (ii) Sustainable seaweed farming and (ii) locally led forest management and conservation. The project will apply an ecosystem-based approach that utilizes significant potential for nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate adaptation with biodiversity co-benefits.

JGI Tanzania is currently seeking to recruit suitably qualified and competent Tanzanian to fill the following vacant positions:

Key Job Responsibilities & Duties:
The key responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:
• Act as the main focal point for the day-to-day management of the project with JGI Canada’s senior manager of programs.
• Responsible for sharing updates and engaging in regular communication with the JGI Canada team.
• Provide the overall supervision and leadership of the day-to-day project operations.
• Ensure project resources including personnel are adequately and efficiently utilized.
• Submit regular project performance reports as directed by the Performance Management Plan and work plan.
• Conduct regular staff meetings.
• Collaborate with the district and regional governments and councils in implementing project activities.
• Build the capacity of villages to engage in conservation and establish village forest reserves and protected mangrove sites within the project area.
• Develop and implement annual work plans and monitor project activities to ensure timely implementation and reporting.
• Promote knowledge, awareness and create inspiration among children and youths on climate change adaptation and Biodiversity conservation.
• •Engage communities and local authorities in forest monitoring including the establishment of Forest Monitors and Support the establishment and operationalization of BMUS.
• Conduct rapid assessments and regular biodiversity inventories to establish a Bio-data base on Coastal and Marine Ecosystems in collaboration with local and international partners.
• Foster partnerships with key state governments and relevant technical institutions working on climate change issues and Biodiversity conservation.
• Prepare quarterly project progress reports, presentations, and other documents for review by the project steering, JGI and Plan International

Minimum Job Requirements & Qualifications:
The minimum job requirements and qualifications will include, but not be limited to: Holder of a Masters’ degree in biodiversity conservation, environmental science, natural resources management, climate change, and integrated coastal and marine conservation sciences-related fields.
At least 10 years of work experience of project management in fields related to the implementation of biodiversity management, conservation, coastal and marine ecosys- tems, and climate adaptation.
• Previous experience in working in remote areas of Tanzania implementing integrated conservation and climate change projects.
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team environment.
• Ability to work under pressure, tight deadlines, and less supervision, self-motivated person, and a team player.
• Experience in working with various stakeholders such as various agencies, government departments, UN agencies, and different partners.
• Good communication skills – fluent in Swahili and English, both verbal and written.
• Excellent presentation, reporting and inter-personnel skills.
• A track record of successful work on complex donor funded projects in a rural context working with multiple stakeholders including businesses, non-governmental organiza- tions, academic/research institutes, and governments.
• Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas quite frequently.
